Francis Stuart (1902 - 2000)

The Irish writer Francis Stuart was a complex and controversial figure, whose devotion to imaginative fiction led him to live against the tide of convention. Pursuing, as he saw it, the primacy of the interior, private experience over the wider civic responsibility, he spent adventurous times, including working for both the IRA and the Nazis, and - as a much older man - flirting with extreme Protestantism in Ulster.
